Session 2 BK 193- 194

Objective: Compare the differences between eukaryotes and prokaryotes.

Instructions: (1) Make a Venn Diagram establishing the differences and similarities between prokaryotes and eukaryotes.

(2) Draw a prokaryotic cell and a eukaryotic cell labeling its parts.

(3) Answer section assessment 7-1

PROKARYOTIC CELL

Section Assessment 7.1

  1. a- Review. What is a cell?

___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

b- Explain. What three statements make up the cell theory?

___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
c. Infer. How did the invention of the microscope help the development of the cell theory?

___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

  1. a- Review. How do microscopes work?

___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
b- Apply Concepts. What does it mean if a micrograph is “false- colored?”

___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

  1. a- Review. What features do all cells have?

___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
b- Summarize. What is the main difference between prokaryotes and eukaryotes?

___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
A light microscope can magnify images up to 1000 times. To calculate the total magnification of a specimen, multiply the magnification of the eyepiece lens by the magnification of the objective lens used. (See appendix B.)

  1. Calculate. What is the total magnification of a microscope that has an eyepiece magnification of 10X and an objective lens magnification of 50X.

___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

  1. Calculate. A 10 micrometer cell is viewed through a 10X objective and a 10X eyepiece. How large will the cell appear to the microscope user?
