 Placebo: Brian Molko, Stefan Olsdal y Steve Hewitt. Un americano - inglés, un sueco y un inglés. Tres nacionalidades distintas, tres personalidades diferentes pero una misma manera de entender la música, la vida, que les llevó a encontrarse en el Londres de principios de los 90.
Placebo: Brian Molko, Stefan Olsdal, Steve Hewitt. One American/ British, one Swede and one Englishman. Three different nationalities, three different personalities but the same way of understanding the music, the life that led them to meet in London al the beginning of the 90's .
Brian y Stefan pasaron parte de su adolescencia en Luxemburgo. Ambos acudían al American School de Luxemburgo aunque durante ese período no cruzaron ni dos palabras. A los 17 años, Brian, decidió cerrar la puerta de su etapa en Luxemburgo y comenzar una nueva vida en Londres donde estudió arte dramático en el Goldsmith College. Stefan, por su parte, volvió con sus padres a Suecia.
Brian and Stefan spent some time of their teens in Luxembourg. Both studied at the American School of Luxembourg although during that period neither of them spoke actually one to the other. At the age of 17 Brian decided to close the door of his period in Luxembourg and start a new life in London where he studied drama at Goldsmith`s College. Stefan, meanwhile, came back to Sweden with his parents.
Casualidades de la vida o avatares del destino, sus caminos volverían a encontrarse unos años después en el metro de la capital británica. Stefan había seguido a sus padres hasta allí y estudiaba guitarra en el Musicians Institute en el East End londinense y Brian, por aquel entonces, ya componía sus propios temas e incluso había actuado alguna que otra vez junto a un batería llamado Steve Hewitt, a quien conoció a través de una amiga del Goldsmith.
Chance or destiny, their ways/ paths got crossed again some years later in the London tube. Stefan had followed his parents to there and was studying guitar at the Musicians Institute in the East End. Brian, at that time, was already composing his own themes and even had played occasional gigs with a drummer called Steve Hewitt that had met through a friend at Goldsmith.
Tras darse cuenta de que tenían más cosas en común de las que jamás hubiesen imaginado, Brian y Stefan, decidieron formar un grupo, al que en un principio llamaron Ashtray Heart, pero que finalmente pasó a adoptar el nombre de Placebo. Steve participó en las primeras demos del grupo pero debido a los compromisos que le unían con su banda, Breed, dejó estas colaboraciones y su lugar fue ocupado por un batería sueco llamado Robert Schultzberg, con quien Stefan ya había tocado en sus años de instituto.
After realising that they had more in common that they never thought, Brian and Stefan decided to form a band. First they called it Ashtray Heart but finally it adopted the name Placebo. Steve played on the very first Placebo demos but because of his commitments with his band Breed, he was replaced by a Swedish drummer called Robert Schultzberg who with Stefan had played in his school years.
El debut de Placebo sobre el escenario sería en enero de 1995 en el Rock Garden de Londres y en octubre del mismo año graban su primer tema, "Bruise Pristine", para el sello independiente Fierce Panda. En continua actividad, dieron numerosos conciertos en locales de todo el país y en el circuito universitario. A final del año. "Come Home", un single grabado para el sello independiente Deceptive, se coloca en el número tres de las listas británicas independientes.
Placebo' s live debut was at London' s Rock Garden in January 1995 and in October they recorded their first song "Bruise Pristine" for the Fierce Panda indie label. The band were in constant activity playing gigs in clubs and (university atmosphere) all over the country. At the end of the year, "Come Home" a single recorded for the Deceptive Label reached the number 3 in the British indie chart.
En enero de 1996 Placebo crea su propio sello discográfico, Elevator Music, mediante un contrato especial con Hut Recordings, sello subsidiario de Virgin. Ya entonces, el sonido y el lenguaje tan particular de Placebo había llegado a oídos de David Bowie y éste les invitó a ser teloneros en varios de sus conciertos del Outside Tour, lo cuál supuso una gran oportunidad a nivel promocional y una gran experiencia personal.
In January 1996 Placebo set up their own label, Elevator Music, through a special deal with Hut Recordings, subsidiary label of Virgin Records. At that time the peculiar Placebo sound and language had already come to David Bowie's attention who invited them to support him in some of the Outside Tour's dates. This was a great promotional opportunity and a great personal experience.
Durante la primavera del mismo año graban en Dublín su primer álbum, junto al productor Brad Wood, el cual salió a la venta en julio y llegó a ser disco de oro en Inglaterra. De nuevo en la carretera, los conciertos les llevaron de gira por todo el Reino Unido e incluso por América, Alemania y Francia. Fue entonces cuando Steve se reincorporó a la banda, para quedarse definitivamente, tras la marcha de Robert a causa de problemas de entendimiento con el resto del grupo. Y es que la química surgida entre ellos en aquellas primeras demos resultó ser irremplazable.
During the spring of the same year Placebo recorded in Dublin their first album with the producer Brad Wood. The eponymously- titled album was put on sale in July and went on to achieve gold status. Again on the road, Placebo toured all over UK and even America, Germany and France. It was then when Steve rejoined the band to stay for good after Robert left Placebo because of understanding problems with the other members. The fact is that the chemistry arisen among the three of them in those first demos turned out to be irreplaceable.
Como confirmación del éxito que Placebo estaba alcanzando, en enero de 1997, el single "Nancy Boy", que se incluyó en la banda sonora de la película española "Airbag", alcanzó el número cuatro en las listas del Reino Unido. Ese mismo mes, actuarían como invitados especiales junto a otros artistas en el Madison Square Garden de Nueva York en la fiesta del 50 cumpleaños de Bowie. El grupo no paró en todo el año realizando su propia gira en el Reino Unido y actuando como teloneros de U2 en muchas de las fechas europeas del Popmart Tour.
As confirmation of the success that Placebo were reaching in January 1997, "Nancy Boy" single (which was included in the soundtrack of a Spanish film called "Airbag") went to number 4 in the UK chart. In the same month Placebo played at Madison Square Garden in New York as special guests on the bill of David Bowie' s 50th birthday party. The band didn't stop throughout the year headlining their own UK tour before supporting U2 on many of the Popmart European dates.
Al año siguiente, 1998, además de comenzar la grabación de su segundo álbum, Placebo participó en la película de Todd Haynes "Velvet Goldmine". Su contribución no solo fue sonora, haciendo una versión de la canción “Twentieth Century Boy” de Marc Bolan, sino que cada uno de ellos tuvo su pequeño papel en el film: Brian y Steve formando parte de los Flaming Creatures y Stefan como bajista en otra banda de la película.
In 1998, besides starting the recording of their 2nd album, Placebo took part in the Todd Haynes' film "Velvet Goldmine". They not only contributed to the soundtrack covering "Twenty Century Boy" by Marc Bolan, but they also played roles on the movie: Brian and Steve as members of the band Flaming Creatures and Stefan as bassist in another band of the film.
“Without You I'm Nothing” fue el título elegido para su segundo trabajo y Steve Osborn su productor. El primer single, “Pure Morning”, salió en agosto del 98 entrando directamente al numero cuatro de las listas británicas. Tras él, “You don't care about us” y por fin, el 12 de octubre del mismo año , el álbum completo se puso a la venta . Para quien le gusten las cifras: más de 300.000 copias vendidas en el Reino Unido y alrededor de un millón en el resto del mundo. Como curiosidad: la edición limitada de la canción "Without You I'm Nothing" en la que David Bowie presta su voz al tema.
"Without You I'm Nothing" was the title chosen for their 2nd album and Steve Osborn its producer. The first single "Pure Morning" was released in August 1998 which entered directly at number 4 in the UK chart. The next single was "You don't care about us" and, at last on 12th October, the album was put on sale. To whom that like numbers: 300.000 copies sold in UK and a million around the rest of the world. As curiosity: the limited edition of the song "Without You I'm Nothing" with David Bowie vocals.
Hasta julio de 2000 no encontraríamos en las tiendas el nuevo material de Placebo. Sería “Taste in Man”, un adelanto de su tercer disco: “Black Market Music”. Descubrimos a unos Placebo mucho más seguros de si mismos e implicados en la producción, la cual llevarían a cabo junto a Paul Corkett. Para este trabajo contaron con la colaboración de gente como Rob Ellis, batería y arreglista de P.J Harvey; Severe Loren, cantante y guitarrista de Linoleum; y el rapero Justin Warfield (One Inch Punch) quien prestó su voz para la sorprendente "Spite and Malice".
The new Placebo stuff was in the record stores in July 2000. "Taste in Men" was the advance of their 3rd album "Black Market Music". We found out a band much more self- confident and implicated on the production which they carried out alongside Paul Corkett. Some interesting collaborations were included on this album: Robert Ellis, P.J Harvey's drummer; Severe Loren, singer and guitarist in Linoleum; and the rapper Justin Warfield (One Inch Punch) who lent his voice on the amazing "Spite&Malice".
En septiembre salió el segundo single, "Slave to the Wage", para entonces Placebo ya había paseado Black Market Music, a la venta en octubre, por festivales de toda Europa. La gira se alargó año y medio llevándoles desde Europa hasta Estados Unidos, Canadá, México, Australia, Japón, Rusia. "Special K" y "Black-Eyed" también fueron single. Éste último, formó parte de la banda sonora de una película alemana llamada "Engel&Joe", de la cual pueden verse imágenes en el video- clip de la canción.
In September the 2nd single "Slave to the Wage" was released. Then Placebo had already presented Black Market Music (released in october) in festivals throughout Europe. The tour took them during a year and a half from Europe to U.S, Canada, Mexico, Australia, Japon, Russia...The songs "Special K" and "Black- Eyed" were singles as well. This last one was included on the sountrack of a German film called "Engel&Joe", of which you can see some extracts on the Black- Eyed video.
Tras el último concierto de la gira, el 19 de octubre de 2001 en el Brixton Academy de Londres, hacen un paréntesis durante el cual, además de preparar su cuarto álbum, su cantante Brian Molko realizó interesantes colaboraciones con otros grupos. Así, prestó su inconfundible voz para el tema "Carbon Kid" incluido en el disco “White Noise”de Alpinestars y en dos cortes del álbum Positions de Trash Palace, "The Metric System" y una versión del "J'ai t'aime moi non plus" de Serge Gainsbourg junto a la actriz Asia Argento. También puso en práctica su faceta de D.J en algunos clubs de Londres, Grecia y España (Palma de Mallorca).
After the last Black Market Music tour's gig, on 19th of Octubre 2001 in London's Brixton Academy, Placebo took a break to record their next album. During that time their singer, Brian Molko, made interesting collaboration with other bands. Thus, he lent his unique voice to the song "Carbon Kid" included on the album "White Noise" by Alpinestars and on two tracks of the album "Positions" by Trash Palace: "The Metric System" and a cover of "J'ai t'aime moi non plus" by Serge Gainsbourg with the actress Asia Argento. He also put into practice his D.J's side in some clubs in London, Greece and Spain (Palma de Mallorca).
La ansiedad que provocó entre sus fans la impaciente espera de nuevas canciones, se vio aplacada a principios de 2003 cuando las emisoras de radio comenzaron a pinchar "The Bitter End", arrollador primer single de su cuarto álbum "Sleeping with Ghosts". Una producción cuidada y meditada junto a Jim Abbys, quien a trabajado con gente como Björk, D.J Shadow, U.N.K.L.E, Sneaker Pimps. Nuevos matices, jugueteos electrónicos, guiños al pasado con la vista en el presente, todo ello construido sobre la base del "sonido Placebo".
The anxiety of Placebo`s fans because of the wait for new stuff was calmed down at the beginning of 2003 when radio stations started to play "The Bitter End". An overwhelming first single from their 4th album "Sleeping With Ghosts". A careful and meditated production alongside Jim Abbyss who has worked with Björk, DJ. Shadow, U.N.K.L.E, Sneaker Pimps. New nuances, electronic romps, winks at the past withou losing sight of the present. All this built up on the basis of the Placebo sound.
“Sleeping with Ghost” está en la calle desde el 24 de marzo de 2003 y, en septiembre del mismo año, fue reeditado acompañado de un segundo CD que compila muchas de las versiones de otros grupos que Placebo ha interpretado a lo largo de su carrera musical, incluyendo nuevas adaptaciones de temas de Kate Bush, Boney M, Sinead O’Connor o the Pixies, siendo esta última versión la que ha puesto punto y final a muchos de los conciertos de la gira de promoción del álbum y sin duda, uno de los temas más aclamados de la etapa fantasmagórica de Placebo.
"Sleeping With Ghosts" is in the record stores since the 24th March 2003, later, same year in September a new special edition of the album was released, it came over with a second cd including a big amount of the covers that the band had been performing from theyvery begining, some of them already released as b-sides and others being completely new recordings, covering artists as Kate Bush, Boney M, Sinead O’Connor or The Pixies, being that last one the ending moment of their concerts in this last tour, and one of the most acclaimed in this ghostly phase of Placebo’s career.
Cinco han sido los singles de “Sleeping with Ghost” publicados por la banda. “Bitter End”, “This Picture”, “Special Needs”, “English Summer Rain” y “Protège Moi” -publicado sólo en Francia-. Estos singles han dejado una muestra excelente de caras-b, como “Drink your Pretty” y “Evalia”, que muestran el lado más experimental y maduro de la banda así como interesantes remezclas que han dado un nuevo punto de mira a muchos temas: “I’ll be yours”, “Teenage Angst”, “English Summer Rain” o “Sleeping with Ghost” han sido completamente reelaborados de una forma innovadora que nos muestra el talante más electrónico y ecléctico de la banda. Simultáneamente a todo esto, no hay que olvidar la incesante actividad fuera de la banda de Brian Molko, que ha colaborado en el último disco de Jane Birkin para dejarnos el exquisito dúo “Smile” además de volver a poner sus manos en la mesa de mezclas como dj, esta vez en Tailandia.
5 singles have been taking out from ‘Sleeping with Ghost’ and being released. ‘Bitter End’, ‘This Picture’, ‘Special Needs’, ‘English Summer Rain’ and ‘Protége Moi’ [only published in France]. These singles have come with a few good tracks as b-sides, as ‘Drink You Pretty’ and ‘Evalia’ which show us the most experimental and mature face of the band, there have been some interesting remixes giving a different touch to several tracks as well; ‘I’ll be Yours’, ‘Teeage Angst’, ‘English Summer Rain’ or ‘Sleeping With Ghosts’ have been completely remade in an innovative way letting us to see their most electronic and ecletic point. Besides we won’t forget the incessant activity of Brian Molko apart of Placebo, he has took part on Jane’s Birkin last album where we can listen his voice alongside hers in ‘Smile’, besides his little work as a dj, this time around Thailand.
Pero indiscutiblemente, el plato fuerte de la época “Sleeping with Ghost” ha sido su trepidante gira, que ha llevado a la banda a actuar por todo el mundo. Desde México hasta Australia, pasando por Japón, permitiendo que todo el mundo pueda apreciar muchos de los temas que ya se han convertido en clásicos, además de otras muchas curiosidades inéditas como las versiones en directo de nine inch nails, Janis Joplin, Queens of the Stone Age o el tema aun no realizado, “Long División”. Sin duda esta ha sido la gira que ha consagrado internacionalmente a Placebo como astros del escenario y por suerte ha sido inmortalizada gracias a la publicación del DVD “Soulmates Never Die, Live in Paris 2003”, primer directo publicado por la banda y que nos muestra la intensidad de su música y su puesta en escena. Frente a 16000 personas se desata un concierto que refleja la contundencia, madurez y entrega del grupo hacia su público, repasando temas de todos sus álbumes con la fuerza y el desgarro que Placebo acostumbra a poner en ellos junto al apoyo de un público desbordado por las sensaciones que el concierto le transmite.
But no doubt that the big point of ‘Sleeping With Ghosts’ time has been their non-stop tour which has took the band all around the world. From Mexico to Australia, passing Japan and China, giving everybody the chance to appreciate all those songs that have already become classics, giving also some big surprises to their fans as acoustic versions of Nine Inch Nails, Janis Joplin, Queens of the Stone Age or the no-yet released track ‘Long Division’. This tour has been indisputably the one to stablish internationally Placebo as truly big stars on stage and luckily it will remain reflected thanks to the DVD ’Soulmates Never Die – Live in Paris 2003’ edition, first live release of the band that shows us the big intensity of their music and their performing on stage.
“Sleeping with Ghost” ha sido, por todas estas razones, el disco que ha consolidado a Placebo como una banda madura que sabe adaptarse a todas las posibilidades que la tecnología pone al servicio de la música sin renunciar a su estilo y sus raíces. Esta evolución musical y su intachable presencia en el escenario han hecho de Placebo un grupo que está en lo alto del panorama musical internacional y todo apunta a que ocuparán ese puesto con dignidad durante mucho tiempo.
Has been ‘Sleeping With Ghosts’ for all those reasons the album to consolidate Placebo as a mature band, being able to take the most of the new technologies in music world and adapt them to their own sounds keeping their personal style and background. This musical evolution and their incredible labour on stage has made of them a band which is in the highest places inside the international music and it seems that they’ll be there smartly for a long time.
